Summer has begun. A number of community groups in collaboration with the NYC Parks Department and frequently with some measure of various levels of government funding, have put together a summer full of films and free summer concerts in the parks. The free concerts listed below are designed for young and old alike and they're FREE.

Free Summer Concerts at the Bronx Music Heritage Center / aka BMHC 2023

Free Things to do / Outdoor Concerts in Morrisania / Foxhurst in the Bronx NYC

I have called BMHC to request that they update their website, because it hasn't been updated since March 2020 when the pandemic began. They told me they are working on it, but I haven't seen any change since I made the request. They do update their Facebook page regularly, but I don't have the resource to monitor and post such short notice notifications. So you'll have to use the 'contact' links above to keep track of their events on your own. I will resume posting BMHC events after they resume keeping their website up-to-date again.

They describe what to expect as follows, " ... Born to Puerto Rican parents in the South Bronx, Eddie Palmieri had already performed at Carnegie Hall by the time he was 11 years old. The GRAMMY award-winning pianist, bandleader, arranger, and composer has spent much of his life mastering his craft, innovating new styles and sounds that place him at the vanguard of salsa and Latin jazz. In the early ‘60s, his band La Perfecta laid the foundation for the New York salsa sound by swapping out trumpets in favor of trombones for his front line. A celebration of Ghanaian culture and heritage, this family-friendly public installation showcases Ghanaian tradition, music, dance, art, food, and regalia. This year’s event—the 13th in New York City—is headlined by Stonebwoy, a Ghanaian pop singer named Artist of the Year at the 2015 Ghana Music Awards who has collaborated with the likes of Sean Paul, Keri Hilson, Trey Songz, and Burna Boy. • Sunday, August 7, 2022 from 11 am - 5.30 pm - Old Timers Music Festival - This festival has apparently been running for over 50 years. They describe the event as follows, "... For decades the first Sunday of August people gather in Crotona Park in The Bronx to cookout, spend time with family and to catch up with old friends. This annual tradition brings thousands of people out to have a good time listening to music, dancing, eating, playing cards ... this year Forest Playground Neighborhood Association (F.P.N.A.) and CTS Productions is teaming up to bring some of the hottest local entertainers ... at the Crotona Park Amphitheatre located at 559 Claremont Pkwy, Bronx, NY 10457..."

Lehman College CUNY - Free Summer Concerts in the Jerome Park Neighborhood of the Bronx

Summer Concerts at Lehman College in the Bedford Park neighborhood in the Bronx

Lehman College in Bedford Park generally hosts theatrical and musical productions during the summer, but suspended most programming in response to CoVid in 2020, 2021 and it looks like they are passing on the summer of 2022. They will resume performances in the Fall of 2022.

• Monday, June 26, 2023 beginning at 7 pm -  Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital Featuring Erika Baikoff | Thomas Glass | Cierra Byrd | Juan José Lázaro - At Williamsbridge Oval in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx. This program is sponsored by the City Parks Foundation and is part of their SummerStage Series." FREE summer concerts in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx.

New York Botanical Gardens - Free Summer Concerts in the Bedford Park / Norwood Neighborhoods of the Bronx NYC

Timing. Doors open around 5 pm and the concerts run from 7 - 8.30 pm. The gift shop stays open until 9 pm and Haupt Conservatory stays open until 10.30 pm.

• Thursday, June 22, 2023 from 5 to 10.30 pm - Salute to the Crescent City: New Orleans at 300 Years Old. From 5 - 7 pm the art gallery is open with Georgia O'Keefe's works. The concert run from 7 to 8.30 pm. From 8.30 - 10.30 one may peruse the Haupt Observatory. They describe the concert as follows, " ... The musical heritage of New Orleans comes alive in this premiere concert led by “one of the world’s major clarinetists” Evan Christopher. In celebration of the Crescent City’s 300th Anniversary, this salute explores the marriage of traditions and the cultural diversity that established New Orleans as the birthplace of jazz. A host of New Orleans musicians join Christopher, including pianist David Torkanowsky, vocalist Robin Barnes, trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, trombonist Jeffrey Miller, saxophonist Morgan Guerin, bassist Kerry Lewis, and drummer Shannon Powell... Orchard Beach - Free Summer Concerts in the Pelham Bay Park Neighborhood of the Bronx

Free summer concerts at Orchard Beach Sundays in July 2022 - These used to be Weekly from Memorial to Labor Day

On Sunday, July 9, 2023 from 1 to 5 pm the 2023 Orchard Beach Summer Concert Series began in the Parking Lot at Orchard Beach because an $87 million renovation project began last December 2022.

The remaining weekly concerts will travel to other parks in the borough this summer, as the renovation project is not expected to be completed until the Summer of 2025.

They didn't tell us who would be performing or even what genre of music was being performed, but you can contact them using the information below if you need to know. Free.
