July 4th 2022 and Independence Day Fireworks the Bronx

Typically there are a number of July 4th fireworks displays that are viewable in or from the Bronx. While 2020 was a wash, and 2021 wasn't fully back to normal, it seems in 2022 we're back to having what were the prepandemic fireworks display options. The Orchard Beach fireworks is in the Bronx, and the Astoria Park fireworks in Queens are viewable from the South Bronx, and the Macy's July 4th fireworks is remotely viewable from the southern Bronx. The Coop City fireworks continues its hiatus and at this point seems to have discontinued its effort. And for those who wish to travel to Long Island, the Jones Beach fireworks continue in 2022.

1. Independence Day Fireworks at Orchard Beach Bronx on Wednesday, June 29th, 2022

On Wednesday, June 29th from 6 - 10 pm [main performance / fireworks runs from 7 pm to 9.30 pm] there is an Independence Day celebration at Orchard Beach in Pelham Bay Park. The event generally begins with a concert and a few guest speakers, and just after 9 pm the fireworks display begins along the beach. The event is free, but parking is $8 for a car and $13 for a larger or commercial vehicle. The event is organized by the Bronx Borough President with local pols using your tax dollars.

2. Coop City Independence Day Fireworks in the Bronx Appears to have been Discontinued

There used to be a second 4th of July fireworks in the Bronx which was held at Little League Field in Co-op City in the Bronx. But it hasn't happened since prior to the pandemic and does not appear to be returning this year.

3. Astoria Park Fireworks on Wednesday 6/29/22 on the East River - Viewable from Mott Haven, Hunts Point & Randall's Island

4th of july fireworks 2018 queens nyc july 4thThe Astoria Park Fireworks will happen on Wednessday, June 29th. The festivities begin at 7.30 pm and the fireworks usually go off around dusk which is about 9.30 pm. The best viewing locations in NYC Parks from the Bronx are: 1) Randall's Island, 2) from St. Mary's Park in Mott Haven at St. Ann's Avenue at 149th Street [go to the top of the park hills] or 3) Barretto Point Park which is at Tiffany Street and Viele Avenue on the southwest end of Hunts Point.

This fireworks display is also put together by the Grucci Brothers, the same fireworks company doing the Macy's 4th of July fireworks along the East River on July 4th, in NYC.

The Central Astoria Development Coalition sponsors the annual fireworks display in Astoria Park and the Queens Symphony Orchestra warms up the crowd beginning around 7.30 pm by playing classical music from the 19th & 20th centuries on a stage overlooking the East River in front of the great lawn of Astoria Park [between the pool and Hellgate Bridge].

4. Macy's July 4th Fireworks along the East River Provide Good Viewing from Manhattan, Brooklyn & Queens and are Distantly Viewable from Northern Staten Island & the Southern tip of the Bronx

The Macy's 4th of July fireworks will be shown along the East River this year. They were shown along the East River in 2014 for the first time since 2008, and have remained on the East River ever since. Mayor de Blasio had lobbied the change, which now spans nine years. As previously mentioned, the Grucci Brothers will be doing the Macy's 4th of July fireworks in NYC, which they've been doing for decades.

Recent History of Macy's Fireworks Locations

In 2009 the Macy's 4th of July fireworks were moved to the Hudson River on Manhattan's west side. We were informed they'd moved it to the Hudson River to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery of the river. The Macys 4th of July fireworks display remained there until July 4th 2014, when the Macy's 4th of July fireworks returned to the East River, where it has remained ever since.

4th Of July Fireworks In the Bronx - July 4th, 2022

The Macy's 4th of July fireworks will be lit upon the East River again this year. There will be five barges this year. The number of barges seems to vary between four and five from year to year. The barges will be positioned in the East River between the equivalent of 23rd and 42nd streets on the Manhattan side and 48th Avenue in Long Island City and Green Street in Williamsburg / Greenpoint in Brooklyn. The positioning of the barges and the number of them is designed to maximize the viewing options for an audience estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands.

Best Viewing Locations For the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Bronx 2022

Bronx. Viewing of the Macy's July 4th fireworks from the Bronx is far from ideal as the closest viewing location is the southern end of Randall's Island, which as you can't even see on the map below, and even there it is still far away. The other option is Barretto Point Park near the southern tip of Hunts Point, but that is also suboptimal.

best viewing locations fireworks 2018 best places to watch july 4th fireworks bronx 2018Queens. Blocks along the East River within local neighborhoods on both sides of the river will be cordoned off by the police. This effort begins around 3 to 4 pm in the afternoon and tightens up as the crowds gather. The fireworks are expected to begin about 9.20 pm but you'll need time to get into position. It's also recommended that you forego the lawn chairs and other extra baggage to the extent you can, especially the later you move into position, as this will not just encumber you getting through the crowd.

Looking at the red upside down obelisks, on the map below, from bottom left to top right you see: The location of the northern most fireworks barges in the East River. Gantry Park and the southern tip of Roosevelt Island provide good viewing locations, but access is limited prior to showtime, so I recommend you go no later than late afternoon / very early evening [5 pm'ish]. Queens Bridge Park is also located along the East River, just north of the Queensboro Bridge, but the view is a bit obstructed. The last two locations, Socrates Sculpture Park and Astoria Park are furthest away, and I tested them back in 2016 and found them pretty removed from the action - but the upside there was plenty of room to relax.

Manhattan. Looking at the red upside down obelisks, on the map below, from bottom left to top right you see a number of viewing locations that have worked in prior years and the further north you'll see the ones we expect to be pretty good this year. The locations include the South Street Seaport which is optimal but crowded and you have to get there early in the day to get in. At the green space adjacent to City Hall at the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge is fair, although the high rises block some good measure of the view. Coleman Square and Martin Tanahey Playground have the same issue as the green space at City Hall - some good viewing spots & others not as good. Corlears Hook Park on the Lower East Side should be very good this year.

Brooklyn. The next set of viewing locations are north of the Williamsburg Bridge and are new as optimal ones. In prior years the Lower East Side buildings blocked the view. But this year with the addition of the two new barges north of the Brooklyn Bridge around 30th Street these should provide a good view. These include the East River Baseball field along the East River and Baruch Playground, a bit south and a couple blocks in. And most of the rest of the markers are in spots along the East River, as most of them should have a good Manhattan 4th of July fireworks viewing location. Enjoy.

5. The 4th Of July Fireworks 2022 Continue at Jones Beach, Long Island

4th of july fireworks 2018 queens nycThis year there will be again be 4th of July fireworks at Jones Beach State Park on Long Island. The Jones Beach Fireworks display has been a Long Island tradition for many years.

Public Transit To / From the Bronx & Jones Beach

You can drive to Jones Beach via the Whitestone or Throgs Neck Bridges. Jones Beach is a quick 21 minute train ride from the city, or a reasonable 38 mile car ride from the city, when traffic isn't terrible on the Southern State Parkway or the Meadowbrook State Parkway leading into the park. Most spots along the beach in the park are good viewing locations. And the fireworks, like those in the city, start around dusk which give or take is about 9.30 pm. For cars, admission to the park is $10 and includes the fireworks show.

Or you can take the subway or bus from the Bronx to the Jamaica Queens train station. From Queens, take the LIRR from the Jamaica Station which leaves every 20 minutes during peak hours, arriving in Freeport about 20 minutes later. The return frequency is about the same, as is the travel time of the trip. From the train station, you can take the N88 Long Island Bus, using an MTA Metrocard or coins valued at $2.75. The off peak one way train fares are $7.25 at the ticket office and can rise to $16.00 if you buy it onboard during peak travel times. Jones Beach is a nice quick getaway from the city, and while crowded, not as crowded as in the city.

Please note that the ticket prices mentioned above are from 2022.
