Brief History of Martin Luther King Holiday in NYC

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist Minister who became the leading voice for African Americans' non-violent civil rights movement beginning in the mid 1950's through to his assassination in 1968. In 1983, the third Monday of every year was set aside to honor Martin Luther King for his service to the nation. The third Monday was chosen, as it was the nearest Monday to the anniversary of King's birthday, which was January 15, 1929.

Martin Luther King Day has grown to take on an even larger meaning, as it is oftentimes referred to as a day on, versus a day off. Organizations around the city and nation have used the day to call people into action to address the needs of the community through volunteering and service.

As Martin Luther King Day is a national holiday, it's worth keeping in mind that many / most federal offices will be closed, along with a number of businesses.

Bronx Historical Sites / Bronx History - Things To Do over the Martin Luther King Day Weekend

The Bronx have a number of historical sites which are open to the public on weekends, and sometimes weekdays. The Bronx Historical Society is located in the Valentine-Varian house at 3309 Bainbridge Avenue at 208th Street in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx. The Valentine-Varian house is the oldest remaining farmhouse in the borough and second oldest house, dating back to 1758. The Bronx Historical Society hosts a number of exhibits as well as an array of programs throughout the year.

There's also the Van Cortlandt House in Van Cortland Park, which is a beautiful colonial home of one of the Dutch settlers. It was built in 1748 and is the oldest house in the Bronx borough. It is located at Broadway and West 246th Street in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx at the end of the #1 subway line.

The Bartow Pell Mansion is also worthy of a visit. It was erected in 1836 and is a Greek revival architecture style home - one of the last of that area / era. In addition to some of the public funded theaters at the CUNY colleges, there are a number of smaller, artsy independent theaters in the Bronx. Some have been operating in the Bronx for decade(s), while others are recently new.

Pregones Theater and ID Studio Theater - both in Mott Haven are examples of a long established local theater and an emerging new theater - both in the same neighborhood. An example of an interesting venue is shown in the photo to your right, at the ID Studio Theater in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx in NYC.

Pregones Theater at 571 Walton Street in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx.

ID Studio Theater is located at 311 East 140th Street in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx.

City Island also has a vibrant community theater, offering seasonal performances, so there's nothing doing over the Martin Luther King holiday. And there are also a couple of local theaters in the Wakefield neighborhood, which I'll inform you more about next year.

Orchard Beach in Pelham Bay Park is closed. It's kind of a desolate place to visit on a cold winter day, which you can only get to by bicycle, foot or via car as the public buses only run during the summer season.

Lehman College for the Performing Arts is located along Goulden Avenue between Bedford Park Blvd West and 197th Street in the Bedford Park neighborhood. It's one of the Bronx top performance venues. Check their website for a Martin Luther King Day Weekend performances, although it's likely closed owing to the national holiday.

Manhattan College, Hostos College, Bronx College and Fordham University all organize and sponsor events, but I suspect that like Lehman they don't do much over the Martin Luther King Day Weekend.
