Brief History of Martin Luther King Holiday in NYC

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist Minister who became the leading voice for African Americans' non-violent civil rights movement beginning in the mid 1950's through to his assassination in 1968. In 1983, the third Monday of every year was set aside to honor Martin Luther King for his service to the nation. The third Monday was chosen, as it was the nearest Monday to the anniversary of King's birthday, which was January 15, 1929.

The Bronx have a number of historical sites which are open to the public on weekends, and sometimes weekdays. The Bronx Historical Society is located in the Valentine-Varian house in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx. The Valentine-Varian house is the oldest remaining farmhouse in the borough and second oldest house, dating back to 1758. The Bronx Historical Society hosts a number of exhibits as well as an array of programs throughout the year.

There's also the Van Cortlandt House in Van Cortland Park, which is a beautiful colonial home of one of the Dutch settlers. It was built in 1748 and is the oldest house in the Bronx borough.

The Bartow Pell Mansion is also worthy of a visit. It was erected in 1836 and is a Greek revival architecture style home - one of the last of that area / era. The Bartow Pell Mansion Museum is pretty active in its programming which includes cultural and historical.

And there's Wave Hill in Riverdale. It's the site of beautiful gardens overlooking the Hudson River. They offer regular programming including concerts, garden walks in the better weather and talks.

bronx things to do columbus day weekend bronx columbus day weekend nycIn addition to some of the public funded theaters at the CUNY colleges, there are a number of smaller, artsy independent theaters in the Bronx. Some have been operating in the Bronx for decade(s), while others are recently new. Pregones Theater and ID Studio Theater - both in Mott Haven are examples of a long established local theater, located near an emerging new theater - both in the same neighborhood. An example of an interesting venue is shown in the photo to your right, at the ID Studio Theater in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx in NYC.

City Island also has a vibrant community theater, offering seasonal performances, so there's nothing doing over the Martin Luther King holiday. And there are also a couple of local theaters in the Wakefield neighborhood, which I'll inform you more about next year.

Orchard Beach in Pelham Bay Park is closed. It's kind of a desolate place to visit on a cold winter day, which you can only get to by bicycle, foot or via car as the public buses only run during the summer season.

Lehman College for the Performing Arts is located along Goulden Avenue between Bedford Park Blvd West and 197th Street in the Bedford Park neighborhood. It's one of the Bronx top performance venues. Check their website for a Martin Luther King Day Weekend performances, although it's likely closed owing to the national holiday.
