CLOSED _ McDwyer's Pub in Norwood - St Pat's Day Bars, Restaurants & Irish Pubs in the Bronx
Location. Unfortunately, in December of 2016, McDwyers Pub at 331 East 204th Street near Bainbridge, closed its doors for the last time.
Description. Eamonn McDwyer opened the bar in 1966 and kept it going 50 years. But eventually the times caught up with him. After McMahon's down the street, closed in early 2011, McDwyer's was the last Irish bar in the Norwood neighborhood.
Back in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's Irish pubs in Norwood were booming. At one time there were, according to the Norwood News, 23 bars in the area, although many were not Irish, many were. But when Ireland became a Celtic Tiger in the 1990's, many Irish workers returned home. Thus the Irish population in the neighborhood declined by thousands going from 6,000 back then to about 2,000 today.
Due to a thinning clientele and rising rents, the same issues faced by many small retailers in the city, McDwyer's was forced to close. Goodbye or as they say in Gaelic - slan.
